DanRabbit connu pour ses nombreux thèmes gtk, gdm et thèmes d'icones a désormais un nouveau projet à son actif.

Sur IRC lors de nombreuses discussions, il a soumis l'idée de simplifier "Linux" pour le rendre encore plus accessible. Un nouveau projet de création de distribution a vu le jour: elementary os.

Actuellement le gros du travail consiste en des brainstorming sur le chan IRC et sur le forum d'elementary os, cependant une version pré-alpha et déjà disponible.

elementary os utilise une base Ubuntu ce qui lui apporte une grande stabilité, des packages récents, ainsi qu'une doc très importante. Du coté spécificités on trouve:

  • les thèmes d'originie d'Ubuntu ont tous été remplacé par les thèmes elementary
  • ajout de nouveau fond d'écran
  • utilisation de Docky comme launcher
  • remplacement de nautilus par nautilus-elementary
  • installation par défaut de zeitgeist
  • installation de gloobus-preview
  • remplacement de firefox par midori
  • remplacement de la suite openoffice.org par abiword/gnumeric

Pour le moment les modifications ne sont pas en soit très importantes mais c'est du coté de l'avenir de la distribution que l'on voit les changement majeurs, pour le moment ce ne sont que des idées:

  • remplacement de GRUB par BURG
  • utilisation des packages appInstall
  • remplacement de nautilus-elementary par Dash
  • utilisation d'une nouvelle arborescence de fichier ressemblant à celle de globo-linux

 

Il va donc être intéressant de suivre les nouveautés qui vont arriver avec cette distribution. Qui n'a pas longtemps cherché un fichier dans des dossiers/sous dossiers un peu au hasard?  Grâce à ce chagement d'arborescence on trouvera à la racine du disque:

  • Applications
  • Drives
  • Users
  • System

Dans applications, il y aurait donc un dossier pour chaque application portant le nom de cette dernière suivi de la version. (facile de retrouver le fichier de config d'un logiciel dans ce cas là ^^).

Un thème épuré et clair, une vitesse encore amélioré pour obtenir une nouvelle expérience utilisateur.  C'est peut-être avec cette distribution que l'on trouvera la réponse à la réflexion de Mark Shuttleworth: « I think the great task in front of us in the next two years is to lift the experience of the Linux desktop from something stable and usable and not pretty, to something that’s art. ». C'était il y a 2 ans lors de l’O’Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) de juillet 2008.

Il est clair que le bureau d'Ubuntu a beaucoup évolué et les nouvelles avancées faite dans le projet elementary os sont très encourageante.
