NIS ou Network Information Service (également appelé Yellow Pages) est un protocole de centralisation d'informations de type client/serveur (avec notion serveur master/slave) développé par Sun.
Pour anecdote, le service initialement nommé Yellow Pages n'a pu conserver ce nom, le terme Yellow Pages étant une marque déposée par British Telecom.
NIS permet de centraliser sur un serveur maître un certain type d'informations, nous ne nous pencherons que sur la centralisation des utilisateurs et mots de passe (passwd) et des hosts. Ce tutoriel présente un lot de commandes et de chemin spécifiques aux distributions basées sur Red Hat (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, ...), mais le principe de fonctionnement reste le même sur d'autres distributions telles que Debian.
Afin d'accomplir l'installation, nous aurons besoin d'au moins trois machines (virtuelles ou physiques) fonctionnant sous CentOS 5.5 ou Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5, 32 ou 64 bits. Assurez-vous que toutes les machines ont une configuration DNS correcte, afin d'éviter des erreurs de résolution au premier démarrage de NIS.
