MPlayer est un lecteur vidéo très reconnu pour ses nombreuses qualités telles que le support natif de plus de 150 codecs video, plus de 300 codecs audio et 9 formats de sous-titres ainsi que la lecture des DVD. Il supporte diverses sorties graphiques telles que X11, xv, SDL, DirectFB, ...

Mplayer possède de nombreux raccourçis personnalisables qui rendent son utilisation très pratique. Il est aussi possible de le commander via une télécomande LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control).

Il est aussi capable de reconstruire la table AVI, ce qui permet de visionner les DivX incomplets.
